The Potomac Conference Executive Committee unanimously approved the Growing Healthy Churches Initiative (GHCI) presented by Conference President Bill Miller at its executive session October 23, at the Southern Asia Church in Silver Spring. This vote empowers the conference leadership to pursue finalization of a document that will serve as the blueprint for growth in Potomac Conference. The key element in the plan is its core mission.
According to Growing Healthy Churches, the sole purpose of the conference, as an organization, is to provide support for building growing, healthy congregations. The document outlines a new emphasis on accountability at every level of the organization with clear definitions of what growing and healthy mean. A draft of the initiative had been presented at a previous executive committee session, and members were encouraged to pray earnestly about it to determine if this represented the path for Potomac to pursue. A palpable atmosphere of exhilaration and a buzz of expectancy circulated in the room during the latest session as the initiative was read and discussed.
During the discussions, Before the vote was called, committee members were already expressing in sidebar conversations that this was the direction that was needed to put all of the conference on the right path. The GHCI concept was presented and evaluated at the Potomac Conference Pastor/Teacher Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia earlier in the month. At that convention, the initiative was greeted with enthusiasm by the people who will experience its greatest impacts—pastors, teachers and administrators. Now, with executive committee approval, the way is clear for administrators to refine the document and carefully strategize implementation. According to Miller, “This was a historic day for the Potomac Conference as we prayed through and talked through what it will take for healthy churches to be the central focus for us. “ |
