Dominican Republic: President donates land to Adventists

The Dominican Republic national leader donated 31 acres of public land -- already used by Seventh-day Adventist young people for annual retreats -- to the church last month. During the March 28 donation ceremony, he applauded the church's work and image in the country.

Kenya: Adventists oppose six-day workweek proposal

Seventh-day Adventists in Kenya are criticizing a government six-day work week proposal that would require civil servants to work on Saturday, the biblical Sabbath and day of rest for the nearly 16 million-member global denomination.

Kenya's minister of state for public service introduced the proposal after a government team examined a new work model.

Adventist Church leaders called on the government to suspend the proposal, saying requiring members employed as civil servants to work on Saturday would conflict with the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion.

Richmond Evangelistic Center Dedicated

Members of the Richmond Evangelistic Center in Virginia recently had a grand opening celebration in honor of their new church facility. The officers of the Potomac Conference, representatives from local government, members of Maranatha Volunteers International (which helped build the facility), and members of area churches—more than 500 people in all—came together to dedicate the facility to the Lord.

Despite the turbulent world economy, the Seventh-day Adventist Church continues to grow financially, world church treasurer Robert E. Lemon reported to church leaders Sunday.

"Not only have tithes and offerings increased," Lemon said, "but the church was blessed to receive a multimillion dollar 'extraordinary tithe.' Lemon's April 6 financial report at the church's spring business meeting reflected about half of that extraordinary tithe, which was first announced at the church's fall 2007 business meeting.

The questions ranged from science to pop culture, and "multiple sclerosis" was the $50,000 answer for students from Seventh-day Adventist-owned Oakwood University competing in a national college bowl.

The Huntsville, Alabama-based Oakwood team joined more than 320 college students from 64 other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for the 19th annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge on March 28 to 29.

Don't confine spirituality to the church pew, Seventh-day Adventist world church president Jan Paulsen told a group of church leaders yesterday during remarks meant to kindle more deliberate community involvement by Adventists, who -- despite recent marginal improvements -- still score low in ministry beyond the pulpit according to church officials.

Brasil: Las escuelas adventistas crecen junto con la iglesia

With a 37 percent increase in schools over the past decade -- now 318 -- Seventh-day Adventist education in Brazil is booming. Adventist-run schools are deemed some of the country's most competitive, drawing significant non-Adventist enrollment, and are positioned to help grow the church's membership, Adventist leaders there say.
